Chatham County was founded in 1771 and located in the geographic center of the state. The county was formed from part of what once was Orange County.

Pittsboro

The City of Pittsboro was chartered in 1787. The population of Pittsboro is 2,226. Pittsboro is served by US 15-501 and Hwy 64 and is an hours drive from two international airports, Raleigh - Durham International and Piedmont Triad International.

Siler City

Siler City Town HallThe Town of Siler City was chartered on March 7, 1887, and is the largest town in Chatham County. It is located within an hour's drive from the state capital, Raleigh. The Town of Siler City has 6,966 citizens with a land larger than 4 square miles. The highway system in and around Siler City continues to improve with the completion of the US 421 Bypass, as well as the current construction of the US 64 widening project. With four lane highways running both North-South and East-West, Siler City is at a crossroads where continued growth and economic development are ever present.

Jordan Lake

The county is also home to Jordan Lake, a regional reservoir, with more than 46,000 acres, and one of the state's top recreational areas. Three rivers, the Haw, Deep, and Rocky provide scenic beauty, recreation, and drinking water to the county and surrounding region. The natural beauty of the county belies its diverse mixture on industry, which include lumber and wood products, textiles, brick making, metal working, and poultry production.
